We moved from California at the beginning of the summer, got the keys to our new home in July and the container of stuff from the US arrived in August. When we moved to California we didn't really know for how long it would be and we didn't have a container in that direction included in our deal, so we chose to store a lot of stuff then (6.5 years ago) and also get rid of some larger furniture etc that wouldn't fit in the storage we were renting.
Then came that day when we had to start going through our stored stuff... About 50 boxes that we hadn't missed much and didn't really know what they contained. Some stuff went straight to the recycling centre with the question, why did we save this? Other things required more thought. After weeks with our noses in the moving boxes, many trips to the recycling centre and the local second hand shop, we felt like we were fairly settled. But to fit everything from the old storage, it took a few trips to IKEA too, to buy furniture to store the stuff in...
We took a week's holiday, went hiking in the mountains. We managed just fine, with a backpack containing clothes, toiletries and food. We all enjoyed just being, outdoors in the beautiful nature!
The following Monday the container arrived! We just managed to get reasonably in place. Then it was time again! Down with the nose in the moving boxes. A whole truck arrived. With our home from California. How were we going to fit it all in? I still ask myself that question daily as I zigzag between unpacked stuff and boxes.
And then I can add that I usually think through purchases before they are made and I regularly purge because I like the feeling of having what is needed at home, but certainly not accumulating a lot of unnecessary stuff. When you move it becomes so clear what a materialistic society we live in. Especially when it comes to all the kids' things. They don't even play or use a fraction of them.
Thought of the day:
How many things do we really need to have a functional everyday life?
