9 ways to treat sore throat naturally

A few weeks ago, our youngest child started complaining that she had a sore throat and my first thought was: "Oh, no, not now!" I really didn't feel like everyone in the family was going to get sick and in the event of a sore throat also have to take antibiotics!

So instead of taking her to the doctor, I used my knowledge and compiled a list of what we did to boost her immune system, so that the healing process could begin.

Our bodies are amazing and after struggling with a sore throat for about 5 days, she recovered and was back stronger than ever, without having to take a single antibiotic pill!

So how exactly did we do it? I have to be super clear here, I'm not a doctor! I am a holistic lifestyle coach and I work to use natural methods to help the body fight (in this case sore throat) bacteria and viruses and keep the body in balance.

I checked the fever every day to make sure we were moving in the right direction, I also checked her throat (with a flashlight) to see if the swelling and white spots were getting better and of course I communicated with her to see how she was doing. I decided to give it three days, if nothing had changed for the better before then, I would have taken her to the doctor. But after only two days we saw improvements!

Below are 9 tips on what we did and what you can try next time you or someone in your family has a sore throat.

9 ways to treat sore throat naturally

Cut down on sugar! Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, protein and good fats. Keep your diet clean from junk food.

Drink plenty of high quality water! Filter the water or buy spring water.

Rest, rest, rest! Keep the physical and mental stress down, sleep at least 8 hours every night. Give yourself extra love!

Boost your vitamin C intake with freshly squeezed grapefruit, orange and/or lemon juice.

Take Echinacea (non-alcoholic) drops and take as much and often as described on the label.

Take really good probiotics to help boost your immune system! There should be at least 6 different strains and 30 billion live organisms per dose.

Take 1 teaspoon Manuka honey MGO 400 (or higher MGO) twice a day. You take one teaspoon when you wake up in the morning and one teaspoon just before you go to bed. Let the honey dissolve in your mouth and wait for 15 minutes before eating or drinking.

Let a few Manuka Throat Lozenges melt in your mouth during the day. Maximum 8 lozenges per day.

Drink hot chamomile tea with lavender during the day (without honey).

  • Mental pain


    In the past I have chosen not to write about this topic, but because I find it so central and important, I have decided to try to put into words what mental pain can mean.

    Pain, whether physical or mental, is felt and experienced in different ways. It is often difficult to describe pain in words. I would describe pain as an effect of trauma. These are feelings that usually hurt your soul because of something specific that happened and/or affected you. It could be losing someone you love, an assault, prolonged periods of unbearable stress, being in physical pain or some other trauma. Common to all traumas is that not only can trauma haunt the mind, it can also affect the nervous system. Our nervous system learns to cling to trauma as a survival mechanism. This is why we often feel anxious and on guard when we anticipate another traumatic event (Levine, 2010), leading to debilitating symptoms included in what we call post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
